First in Central Florida

Air Venturing Crew

Aviation Venturing Crew 103 Established

Charts path for youth from classroom to cockpit

The first Air Venturing Crew in Central Florida has been established at Gainesville’s University Air Center. The new unit will help create leadership development and core values for youth through a focus on aviation and flying activities and functions, William "Bill" Pokorny, General Manager of the air center pointed out.

At the organization meeting held on October 25th, the new Air Crew elected the following officers:

President Luis M. Rodriguez

Vice President, Programs Ashleigh D. Diehl

Vice President, Administration Ryan A. Hewitt

Crew Secretary Jonathan L. Samonas

Treasurer Aubrey K. Kersey

The North Florida Council, BSA, has designated the new unit as Aviation Venturing Crew 103, reported Crew Committee Chairman, Bill McKown.  A Charter Presentation Ceremony is being planned for Sunday, January 28, 2007 at 1800, he recently announced.

Members of the Crew Committee for the new Air Venturing Crew include: Bill McKown, Al Prescott, Richard Bray, Tracy Connors, Louis Kalivoda, and Shaun Kersey, who will serve as the Crew Advisor.  Pokorny will also serve as Chartered Organization Representative for the new unit.

The new Venture Crew will provide benefits to the youth members, adult volunteers and the sponsoring organization by offering a new program of exciting and meaningful activities at the air center that will help youth pursue special interests in aviation, develop leadership skills in an aviation context, and become better citizens.

Crew Officers, led by President Rodriguez and Vice President (Programs), Diehl, are working with Crew Advisor Shaun Kersey on an innovative program plan for future meetings that will include:

  • introduction to ground school
  • another visit to the Gainesville Control Tower for those who could not attend the most recent meeting
  • a visit to the Alachua County Sheriff's Department hangar and a tour of law enforcement helicopters and operations
  • a visit to the U.S. Navy Aviation Museum in Pensacola.

A logotype is being designed that will be used on ball caps and T-shirts in coming weeks.

AC Secretary and webmaster Jonathan Samonas is preparing Crew web pages that will be posted the near future on this site to provide more information.  Why not bookmark this site and check it for updates weekly.

Numerous aviation-related activities and pursuits are being planned, ranging from aviation ground school experience to a "discovery flight," aviation special event participation to public service projects and initiatives. The plan even envisions a path for Crew Members to earn their private pilot’s license. These goals and objectives are being built into the unit’s plan of action for 2007.

(Above, right) If you see yourself in the "cockpit," then becoming a member of the Air Venturing Crew is something you should consider.  Program activities include working to earn a private pilot's license and trips to well-known aviation centers such as the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola and the Kennedy Space Center.

Air Crew Meetings are held twice a month on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at Gainesville’s University Air Center.  For the date of the next meeting contact:

“Charter Member” status will remain open until closed by Crew Officer decision.
