Roundtable Notes

Alachua District

Much Thanks to:

·        Fred Hilton (Chair), Elliot Douglas, Ian Jarnagin, Mike Knezevich, Greg McDonald, Dennis Moreau, Dino Muggeo, Jeff Opalko, Mark Robinson, Tim Sagul, Ruben Rothschild, Ron Spitznagel, Ross Woodward and Todd Yurchisin for their hard work completing a weekend of training for Troop Leaders at Camp Shands. Having New Leaders Essentials, Scoutmaster Fundamentals and Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills all in one weekend makes for a long 2 ½ days but makes for some quickly trained Scout Leaders. We now have 25 more in our district! Thanks!

For All:

·         Please use the online advancement program to do a unit audit and make sure all your active Scouts are registered.

·         The annual Program Planning Conference is Thursday May 8th  6:30 pm at the University of Florida Law School.  This is an opportunity for a representative of every unit to attend and to receive information on District and Council activities for the period August 2008 to June 2009. This information will support your unit planning meeting which should take place in late May or early June.

For Committee Members:

·         Please bring your unit popcorn commitment cards to the Program Planning Conference on May 8th or to the June Roundtable. It is not too early to make plans to have a successful (ideal) year of Scouting.

·         There is a new Tour Permit. Old ones are good until gone. There are some additional training requirements on the new form. The new form is available at www.scouting.org.

·         All units now have both a unit account and a unit registration account at the Council Service Center. Money in the registration account can only be spent on registration. Money in the unit account cannot be spent on registration. Only registered unit leaders can authorize transfers from the registration account to the other. A unit registration account deposit will have an “R” on the receipt after the unit number.

For Boy Scout Leaders:

·         Do you have your 2008 summer camp destination picked out? If so, please give the location and the date to District Camping Chair, Milledge Murphey (h) 373-9234, mmurphey@hhp.ufl.edu or to Gary.

·         There are new activities including Climbing Instructor Training, Brownsea, Philmont 2009 and Extreme Fest at Camp Echockotee listed on the council web site.

For Cub Leaders:

  • Webelos Resident Camp early registration has been extended until May 9th. See the council website for additional details.
  • Have all your Webelos contacted troops to schedule visits? Do you know which ones are crossing over? Contact Libby Dunn (w) 352-333-0089, edunn@impactllc.net with the information.
  • The Gainesville Cub Day Camp will be June 9-13 at T.B. McPherson Center  1717 SW 15th St. Please start promoting this vital event to your Cubs. Applications may be downloaded from www.nfcscouting.org. Contact Inga Glaspey, (h) 352-256-8580, hawthornscouts@gmail.com for additional information.
  • There will be a Cub Day Camp in Chiefland June 23-25. Contact Gary Keeler (h) 352-463-7037, garyjokee@earthlink.net if you are interested in participating.
